Teaching Children Bible Doctrines

Dear Diary,

1 hr
My name is Elizabeth Kalekye Nzaku,a.k.a. NzakuNashipae, a.k.a Mbela, a.k.a Kachel.
I teach Sunday School.
I love my experiences in the Children's Church. No regrets. Am proud to be a Sunday School Teacher.
In my free time I read books especially about children's ministry.
Am currently reading "How to Teach Bible Doctrines to Children," written by Sam Doherty founder of #CEF Ireland.
Because I love to share...
Here are some basic thoughts I gleaned from this book:
First, in this context, Doctrine is simply the fixed, settled and objective body of truth revealed by God to the apostles and prophets and written through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Second, teaching sound doctrine is important because it is the basis of what we are (character), and what we do (actions); it is a defense against world evils and problems. Lack of doctrinal understanding causes people to be led astray easily.
Third, the biblical goal of sound doctrine is spiritual growth, changed behavior and more devoted service to Jesus Christ.
Fourth, it is tragic to teach doctrine on its own without application. It's neither helpful to teach application without teaching the doctrinal truth on which the application is based. In other words, sound doctrine leads to application; application is based on doctrine.
Fifth, sound (Bible) doctrine came to us through these steps: 1. Revelation-God revealed His truth to prophets and apostles; 2. Inspiration-not only did God reveal Himself to prophets and apostles, He also guided and inspired them to write the Bible Doctrines; 3. Illumination-all the sound doctrine we need is contained in the Bible and the Holy Spirit's present ministry is to illuminate it for us to understand the truth; 4. Application-sound doctrine is not just what is believed and taught. Its truth must influence us.
So, should lil' boys and girls be taught Bible Doctrines? In my opinion, YES. Why? Because: 1. There's great dearth of doctrinal understanding among children; 2. Teaching sound doctrine is the Biblical pattern of ministry. Our perfect model, Jesus Christ taught doctrine and also commanded His disciples to teach it; His apostles taught it and actually the early church was based upon sound doctrine. 3. Besides, children too need doctrine as a defense against evil and problems in the world. 4. Finally, for the little ones to become what God wants them to be and do what He wants them to do, sound doctrine is necessary.
Dear Sunday School Teacher, think through the main Bible Doctrines for yourself so that you will have a better understanding of them; prepare to teach them to the Children you minister to in simple, logical, attractive and Spirit filled way.
Regards,
NzakuNashipae
