I believe I am an Ambassador on Assignment in Children's ministry...
This has been my journey....
What amazes me about this assignment is that I never thought I would ever be a Sunday School Teacher. I never saw any quality of a sunday school teacher in me. First, I was very impatient, high irritability, had no teaching skills and not so creative with kids.
In 2000, someone prophesied to me that I'd be a teacher. Sincerely I despised that prophesy and refused to consider it because I never saw myself being a teacher. When I finished High school, mama wanted to take me to a Teaching College and with support from my Uncle organized to have me enrolled at Egoji Teacher's College but I declined opting to take Community Development and Social Work.
In 2006 I did a Certificate Course in HIV/AIDS Training and Counseling with KYOEP, and was posted as a Tutor at some of their Training Centres at Madaraka West, Wangige and Kahawa West. During this period (of about 6 months) as a Tutor I really learned alot and aquired vast teaching skills. Interestingly, all my students were older than me. I remember at Wangige, my oldest student was 75yrs old. Some of the hardest classes were when when I was teaching about Sex and Sexuality and Condoms..... Those were my most challenging classes. During one of my classes, my oldest student said to me, "young girl, you are a great teacher. Very experienced and confident. Consider taking teaching as your profession." At that moment I remembered the Prophesy and I thought to myself, "what is God preparing me for?"
Later on, I went for a Kesha and my Youth pastor, Rev. Nyaoro was preaching. During the Prayer session, i went to ask him to pray for me. When he asked me what to pray for,I told him I wanted to know my ministry. He looked at me and said, "I see a gift of teaching in you..." Again that confirmed God's word. I was in denial and I didn't like the idea of seeing myself as a Primary or High School Teacher... That's how short sighted I was!
In April 2007, I had a strong desire/passion to join Children's ministry in my local church. I talked to the Sunday School Director- Mrs. Mwangi and requested her to let me participate in the VBS week. It was an awesome experience teaching Kids God's word. Since then, no other ministry excites me like being in a Sunday School Class. I have gone for missions in many Primary & High Schools, Colleges and University to teach God's word. Now the Prophecy makes sense :)
I'm grateful to God. It has been an exciting journey as well as challenging.
